So grab your buddies, pack some snacks, and let's hit the offshore grounds where the big ones lurk!
Picture this: You're cruising out of the Big Apple, leaving the skyline behind as we make our way to some of the hottest bottom fishing spots around. Our experienced crew knows these waters like the back of their hand, so you can bet we'll put you on the fish. We're targeting a mix of heavy hitters - Seabass, Cod, Scup (Porgy), Tautog, and Common Ling. These bottom-dwellers put up a good fight and make for some mighty fine eating too. The action tends to be steady, so be ready for your rod to start bouncing pretty much as soon as we drop anchor. And with a max of 6 guests, you'll have plenty of elbow room to work those fish up from the depths.
Bottom fishing is all about getting your bait down where the fish are hanging out. We'll be using heavy sinkers to keep our lines straight down in the current. You might be dropping whole or cut bait, or maybe even some jigs if the bite's really on. The key is feeling for that telltale tap-tap of a fish mouthing your bait. When you feel it, give it a second, then set that hook hard! We provide all the gear you'll need - sturdy rods, reliable reels, and all the terminal tackle. Just bring a good attitude and maybe some sunscreen. Oh, and don't forget a cooler for your catch - you're gonna need it!

Tautog (Blackfish): These wrasse family members are the bulldogs of the bottom. Tautog love structure, hanging around rocks and wrecks where they crush crabs and mollusks with their powerful jaws. They're known for their initial powerful run, often trying to wrap you around whatever cover they came from. The bite can be subtle, so stay alert! Fall is prime time for trophy "toggin'" with fish over 10 pounds not uncommon. Anglers love the challenge of outsmarting these tough fighters, not to mention their delicious white meat.
Scup (Porgy): Don't let their size fool you - these silver-sided panfish are a blast to catch and even better to eat. Scup travel in schools, so when you find 'em, it's often non-stop action. They have small mouths, so finesse is key. A light touch and small hooks will put more fish in the boat. Summer and early fall are peak seasons when big 'hubcap' sized scup move inshore. Pound for pound, they put up a scrappy fight, and their sweet, flaky meat is perfect for the fryer.
Black Sea Bass: These bottom-dwelling beauties are a favorite target for good reason. With their striking black and white coloration and distinctive high dorsal fin, they're a photogenic catch. But it's their aggressive bite and delicious flavor that keep anglers coming back for more. Sea bass typically show up in good numbers from late spring through fall. They love structure, so we'll be hitting wrecks, reefs, and rocky areas to find 'em. When you hook into a big 'knothead' (the nickname for trophy-sized sea bass), get ready for some serious tugging!

Black sea bass are hard-fighting bottom dwellers that'll test your skills. These chunky fish have a distinctive high dorsal fin and can reach 5-8 pounds, though most run 1-3 pounds. You'll find them around wrecks, reefs, and rocky areas from late spring through fall. Sea bass are aggressive feeders and put up a stout battle on light tackle. They're also excellent eating, with firm white flesh. To target them, drop squid or cut bait near structure. A sensitive rod helps detect their quick bites. Once hooked, get 'em up fast before they duck into cover. Interestingly, all start as females and some later become males. A local tip: when you find one, there's usually more nearby. Sea bass fishing is addictive - their eagerness to bite and table quality keep anglers coming back for more.
Scup, also called porgy, are scrappy little fighters that school up in big numbers. These silver-sided fish typically run 8-14 inches and love hanging around rocky bottoms and pilings. You'll find them inshore from spring through fall, often within a few miles of the coast. Scup are fun and easy to catch, making them perfect for kids or beginners. They're also tasty eating fish with delicate white meat. To get into a good scup bite, try drifting or anchoring over structure and using squid strips or clams on a simple bottom rig. Keep your bait moving with little jigging motions - that really gets them fired up. When you find a school, it's often nonstop action. Just remember to check regulations, as limits can change.
Tautog, or blackfish, are tough customers that'll give you a real workout. These stout, mottled-skin fish hang out around rocky structures and reefs, using their strong teeth to crush shellfish. Most weigh 1-3 pounds, but monsters over 20 pounds aren't unheard of. Late spring through fall is prime time, when they're in shallower waters. Tautog put up a stubborn fight, often diving for cover. Their firm white meat is prized for its sweet flavor. To hook one, use green crabs for bait and fish tight to structure. A sensitive rod tip helps detect their subtle bites. Be ready to pull hard - these guys don't give up easily. Just watch your line on those rocks! Tautog fishing takes patience, but landing a big one is seriously satisfying.
